I would layout the git repository in a way compatible with
pristine-tar and git-buildpackage. That would mean that the upstream
sources would be part of the repository.

I am sufficiently firm with git to convert the repository and will
probably have time to do so tonight. I'd create repo under
collab-maint, and it would be your decision to keep it or to move it
into pkg-exim4.
