Thank you for your reply. I noticed the same problem with dovecot 4.83
using the packages you provided. I looked at the source code before and
the dovecot authenticator hasn't drastically changed between 4.80 and 4.83.

I'll also try with a newer dovecot version (from sid) to see if the
behaviour is the same.
