Hello,

is it possible that you are not actually running the Debian provided
exim binary (package version 4.89-5) on the system where this issue
shows? Running an older package, or a locally built version in
/usr/local?

The bug looks identical to a known issue that was fixed upstream by a
patch already included in the Debian package.
