I forgot to mention: google seems to be closing the connection immediately after the deferral, causing the logged TLS error lines, and this seems to be a necessary component for this issue. I don't know how to reproduce this behavior with another exim, the "drop" ACL verb is the closest but that only works with a 5xx response but then the other side won't continue trying to deliver. I haven't found a way to forcibly close the connection after a deferral.
