Thanks for your input, Marc, but I was unable to complete the
troubleshooting process with this issue as my hard disk controller was in
the process of dying.  Massive corruption all data on the disk, journal
cooked, blah.

apt-get install new hard drive, reinstall Debian w/personal preferences,
selectively restore files to /home from backup, etc.

The problem, of course, went away during this process.  I don't believe
the the problem with exim was related to the data corruption on the
disk, however, as this was a sudden, massive failure with no symtoms leading up
to it.

The troubleshooting process you've outlined here is very usefull, and
I've archived it for future reference.
