Here's what I've got:
zev:~# getent group mail
mail:x:8:
zev:~# getent passwd mail
mail:x:8:8:mail:/var/mail:/bin/sh
zev:~# grep 8 /etc/group
list:x:38:
scanner:x:108:mim
mail:x:8:
zev:~# grep 8 /etc/passwd
list:x:38:38:Mailing List Manager:/var/list:/bin/sh
mail:x:8:8:mail:/var/mail:/bin/sh

Ah right. Well here's some on that then:
zev:~# ls -ld /
drwxr-xr-x  23 root root 1024 2005-11-29 13:52 /
zev:~# ls -ld /var/mail
