No, there are no mail processors running at all.  The mail simply gets 
dropped into my in-box and then should be available when my client 
connects to the pop3 server for collecting.
The pop3 server gives the banner
+OK Solid POP3 server ready <28290.1147807575 at ns>
The only thing I can think is that my connection (SMTP first, POP3 
afterwards) is that actually, this is a client timing issue and nothing 
to do with Exim4 at all.
