Agreed.  On the same issue, are failed validity checks logged?  If I 
gravely mutilate the source files update-exim4.conf takes a long time to 
complete and generates a blank (comments only) config.autogenerated 
file, but I can't see any error logged in /var/log/messages or 
/var/log/exim4.

I'm in the process of migrating from Red Hat and sendmail to Debian and 
Exim so please be patient if this is a naive question.
