Have it and have read it.  

Chapter 2 reviews the choices when "dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config" 
executes.  Section 2.1.5 covers "a completely different 
configuration scheme".

Neither helps.  "dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config"
doesn't set the parameters I need.  "A completely 
different configuration scheme" is too radical.  I need only 
to set a few parameters.  Does anyone know where the 
syntax & semantics of the configuration parameters for 
Debian exim4 are specified?  

Seeing that daemon_smtp_ports fails in 
update-exim4.conf.conf I should try them in 
exim4.conf.template.  With enough trial and 
error, the answer might turn up.
