Ok, we have been confusing sarge and etch. README.EXIM.gz is from
sarge mailman, README.Exim4.Debian from etch.

Do yourself the favor and update completely to etch. You have etchs
disadvantages anyway, so you can make use of its advantages as well.

The directions given in the README file look Ok.

Please grep split /etc/exim4/update-exim4.conf.conf.
