I am in the process of setting up new mail servers (as you will see
from another question I have posted).
Setup: 3 old mail servers (all Debian) with MX records
1 new Debian server in evaluation phase with no MX record.
The new setup contained a BATV-mechanism (I have removed it now
temporarily) to block backscatter spam.
I sent out my first question to this list and got the following bounce:
pkg-exim4-users at lists.alioth.debian.org
SMTP error from remote mail server after RCPT TO:<pkg-exim4-users at lists.alioth.debian.org>:
host lists.alioth.debian.org [217.196.43.134]:
550-Verification failed for <prvs=jspies/092037e01f at sun.ac.za>
550-Called: 146.232.64.13
550-Sent: RCPT TO:<prvs=jspies/092037e01f at sun.ac.za>
550-Response: 550 restricted characters in address
550 Sender callout failed: Sender adress can't be verified trough SMTP check.
What happened here was that 146.232.64.13, one the old servers, was
called to verify the sender and the sender verification failed.
Am I correct to assume that I will only be able to implement BATV
successfully when I can do it on all the mail servers? Or will I have
sender verification problems anyhow?
Regards
Johann
