the client device doing the test is 'dns321' (ip: 192.168.1.5),
exim4-daemon-light is running on 'devon' (ip:192.168.1.3)

are you saying 'SMTP connection from (devon.local) [192.168.1.5' closed 
by QUIT' refers to one host? because i'd be in trouble..(i checked my 
dns server, records are ok and checked /etc/hosts file with nothing in 
them but localhost)

if i can't get it to work, i'll just install the heavy edition.. if the 
heavy edition works, i'll blame it about the ghost in the light daemon 
server :)
