This is not likely to work without tweaking other parts of the
configuration, as SMTP on connect is not natively supported (See
/usr/share/doc/exim4-base/README.Debian.gz chapter 2.2.1).

Please consider pestering your ISP to enable STARTTLS on Port 587 of
smtp.suddenlink.net which they have deliberately turned off.

This is normal as with AUTH PLAIN username and password are
transmitted in a single line.
