(Please send replies directly to me in addition to the list.)

I have a few questions about using Exim. Running Exim and Sympa seems
very complex. I pretty much have zero experience managing Exim and
this is my first time using sympa. I installed sympa so I can manage a
couple of small mailing lists.

One of my main concerns is that since Exim is now running on a public
port, I don't want it to be used to send spam mails to local accounts
or through my server to others.

( FQDN = hostname -f )

To avoid getting massive amounts of spam, would it be better to use
sympa with a totally different domain name than the FQDN of the
server? I don't want to receive any external mail to local accounts on
the server. I don't want a pile of spam sent to abuse at FQDN, root at FQDN
etc.

My machine's FQDN is routable and I was wondering if it could receive
mail or not so I sent a mail to "abuse at FQDN" from my Gmail account.
("abuse" is in the "/etc/aliases" file and is redirected to root.)
This message is nowhere to be found. "/etc/mail" has no files in it. I
have not gotten a bounce from Gmail yet.

If I run "dpkg-reconfigure exim4" will it mess up the sympa
configuration? I am pretty sure that sympa is not configured to do
much at this point because I don't remember configuring that part when
debconf ran but sympa has processes running.

I was thinking about adding an alias to send mail for root to my Gmail
account but I'm not sure how to make Exim know that I changed that
file.

Thanks for any assistance you offer!
