I changed my driver to "fglrx" and restarted.  kdm.log shows

Fatal server error:
no screens found

This was with the xorg.conf generated by the Lenny installer, except for
the additional driver specification.

So then
# aticonfig --initial
Found fglrx primary device section
 Unable to find any supported Screen sections
# aticonfig --query-monitor
No layout section was found in the file: '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'.
Please run 'aticonfig --initial' first or modify your configurationfile
manually and run aticonfig again.
aticonfig: parsing the command-line failed.
# I modified xorg.con to have a ServerLayout section
# aticonfig --query-monitor
  Connected monitors: none
  Enabled monitors: none

I did not install the recommend ia32 package.

I added defaultdepth of 32 to the screen section.  Now startup gives the
errors:
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:3:0:1)
found
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:3:0:1)
found
(EE) fglrx(0): Weight given (000) is inconsistent with the depth (32)
(EE) fglrx(0): PreInitWeight failed
(EE) fglrx(0): PreInit failed
SetVBEMode failed
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found


Setting depth to 24 yields these errors:
(EE) fglrx(0): Failed to initialize ASIC in kernel.
(EE) fglrx(0): [FB] Can not get FB MC address range.
(EE) fglrx(0): [pcie] Failed to gather memory of size 0Kb for PCIe.
Error (-22)
(EE) fglrx(0): atiddxDriScreenInit failed, GPS not been initialized.
(EE) fglrx(0): XMM failed to open CMMQS connection.
