Unfortunately, aticontrol (with whatever options) and amdcccle both
seem  to give segmentation faults so looks like I cannot use these.
However, with some more web searching, trial and error (including
failing to initially notice that I had unplugged HDMI cable earlier 
after failed attempts), I managed to craft a xorg.conf that works
fine.

Ok, I think I can now agree on that, but certainly crashing 
configuration tools have significant impact on the usability of the
driver.
