[Pkg-fglrx-devel] Bug#554847: Hopefully the correct logs now.

Friedrich Delgado Friedrichs friedel at nomaden.org

Ok, I have more information for you.

The most relevant part first:

The system locks up quickly after starting X. In fact it's so quickly,
that there were no changes on a filesystem that's mounted
asynchronously.

I've checked the timestamps on the created logs, and I've noticed
there were hours too early.

That means: The Xorg.0.log I sent you has nothing to do with the
lockup.

Sorry, I just noticed this today.

I'm not sure how to deal with this correctly, but I've reproduced the
bug again, after re-mounting the relevant filesystem with the 'sync'
flag, which actually resulted in some logs which are current and
related to the lockup, and I hope they are helpful.

Not the relevant log, but acpid is certainly running every time before
I start X. However it could be that at the time the log was created,
it wasn't running. I don't know when that log was created, it could be
some failed experiment. We should completely disregard it.

Right now (running X with 9.8 driver) I have:

27: 76411 PCI-MSI-edge fglrx[0]@PCI:3:0:0

In /proc/interrupts.

In the Bios of my MSI K9NGM2 board I have two relevant settings:

I can set "OnChip and PCIe VGA selection" to "both" or "auto". The
manual states:

,----
Setting “Auto” to auto detect the graphics card. Or you can set to
both to enable both OnChip VGA and PCIe VGA.
`----

I chose "Auto", which lets me use the card in the PCIE slot and seems
to disable the internal card.

,----
  Primary Graphics Adapter
This setting specifies which graphics card is your primary graphics
  adapter.
`----

I can choose "PCI" or "PCI Expr", and I chose the latter.

The hardware overview screen in the bios still lists the nvidia card,
but linux doesn't seem to see it (see the full lspci -v listing in my
first report).

I just wanted to state evidence that this bug is not specific to the
debian package.

Of course. See the attached type script and xorg.conf.

Ok. This hint was what pointed me at the wrong timestamps.

Let me describe the attachments:

 - fglrx-crash-typescript:

The complete steps up to the crash. Also contains dmesg output
   after loading the module.

Unfortunately it doesn't contain the error output of startx, I to
capture that seperately, since the 'script' couldn't save the file
   before the lockup.

 - interrupts-fglrx-pre-start:

   Contents of /proc/interrupt. I saved
them after loading the module as well, but those two files contain
   the same modules.

 - startx.err.log:
stderr of startx. I also saved stdout separately, but it was empty.

 - syslog-after-startx:

Parts of syslog after startx. This is basically just two additional
   lines:

Nov 24 21:47:12 abrasax acpid: client connected from 4574[0:0]
Nov 24 21:47:12 abrasax acpid: 1 client rule loaded

 - syslog-on-boot:

Syslog (and dmesg) contain a part that strike me as odd.

"mtrr: your BIOS has set up an incorrect mask, fixing it up."
followed by a call trace. These things happen on every boot.

 - Xorg.0.log.fglrx-hang.really:

This is the real output from X this time. ;)

 - xorg.conf:

For completeness, the configuration created by aticonfig --initial,
used for creating the other files.

  Kind regards
       Friedel
