Makefile.in is the output of configure; Makefile.am is the input.
aclocal.m4 is the output of aclocal (run by autogen.sh); acinclude.m4
in the input.

you have restored autogen's output files, which are unnecessary.  you
have also restored NEWS.html, which is automatically built from the
NEWS file in the make process.

was there something tangible that was broken by my changes?  if so, let
me know what it is, and i will fix that directly.
