That didn't make any difference.

> # aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,ForceXAA,TRUE

That made a difference even without a reboot, just restarted X/KDE.

Seems to be working now. Sorry for the "random" nature of the complaint, I 
must confess I didn't see what had been upgraded...
