Does it work for you if you shutdown kdm,gdm whatever, X11 etc at all
and type as root: aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,ForceXAA,TRUE
Reboot and then try again and give me the result of grep -i 2d
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
