[Pkg-fglrx-devel] Bug#645625: fglrx-driver: hangs on startx, using X.Org Foundation libglx.so

Package: fglrx-driver
Version: 1:11-9-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I am no longer able to get into X using fglrx, under the default as-installed
file layout.

When I run startx, the screen goes blank as normal when switching consoles, then
never comes back again. Attempting to switch back manually, using e.g.
Ctrl-Alt-F2, produces no effect. However, the system does appear to shut down
normally when the power button is pressed.

Attached is a diff between the version of Xorg.0.log from the last successful
launch of X before this problem manifested and a generally representative
version of Xorg.0.log as present on the system after rebooting from a 'startx'
hang, with the timestamps cut out to eliminate false-positive differences.

The apparently significant part of the diff is the fact that the "good" launch
was done using the fglrx version of libglx.so, and the "bad" one was done using
the native X.Org version. (The fglrx driver versions are also different, because
in the interim I had upgraded to unstable in hopes that newer package versions
would have fixed the problem, and unfortunately a "failed" log with matching
driver versions is no longer available.)

/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so is apparently provided by
xserver-xorg-core, and (in current package versions) nothing else. In older
but apparently still available package versions, it was (also? instead?)
provided by fglrx-driver.

According to some comments in a recent changelog for fglrx-driver, the libglx.so
compatibility symlink has been removed from that package, at the same time as a
bump to the required version of glx-alternative-fglrx to 0.1.92. I infer from
that comment that possibly glx-alternative-fglrx is supposed to take care of
making sure that the correct libglx.so is used. However, at least on my system
and when using glx-alternative-fglrx version 0.1.94, no such redirection is
made.

Likewise, the description of the 'glx-diversions' package might lead me to
expect that it would handle some aspect of this redirection. Again, however,
this does not appear to be the case.

If I remove my xorg.conf, I can get into X using the RADEON driver, but without
GLX capability. If I also switch my GLX alternative to 'mesa-diverted' instead
of 'fglrx', I can get GLX capability, but with low performance (roughly 1/8th of
what I get with fglrx) and - at least in the case of Minecraft - severe
graphical glitches.

If I restore my xorg.conf, switch my GLX alternative back to 'fglrx', move the
existing libglx.so out of the way, and replace it with a symlink to
/usr/lib/fglrx/fglrx-libglx.so, I can get into X and everything works fine. That
is the configuration under which I am writing this bug report.

The only ways I can see to fix this are to either return to providing libglx.so
via fglrx-driver et al. (either directly or via update-alternatives), or find
some way to modify xorg.conf so that it picks up the correct libglx.so. I have
no idea of how best to do the former, and no good idea of how to do the latter.

If there is anything I can do to help get this fixed, please do not hesitate to
let me know.
