Package: fglrx-driver
Version: 1:12-6-2
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

i'm running a lenovo S205 laptop that has an onboard "Radeon HD 6310" gfx card
with arch=amd64. since i do need 3d acceleration i installed the proprietary
drivers, and was happy until recently.

   * What led up to the situation?

i usually have apt-sources that mix testing/unstable with the occasional stable
package, and keep the system reasonably uptodate. (e.g. during the freeze
process i have upgraded regularily).

<aptitude.log>

[UPGRADE] fglrx-glx:amd64 1:12-6~beta-1 -> 1:12-6-2
[UPGRADE] fglrx-modules-dkms:amd64 1:12-6~beta-1 -> 1:12-6-2
[UPGRADE] libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64 7.7.1-5 -> 8.0.3-1
[UPGRADE] xorg:amd64 1:7.5+8+squeeze1 -> 1:7.7+1
[UPGRADE] xserver-xorg:amd64 1:7.5+8+squeeze1 -> 1:7.7+1
[UPGRADE] xserver-xorg-core:amd64 2:1.7.7-14 -> 2:1.12.1.902-1
[UPGRADE] xserver-xorg-input-all:amd64 1:7.5+8+squeeze1 -> 1:7.7+1
[UPGRADE] xserver-xorg-input-evdev:amd64 1:2.3.2-6 -> 1:2.7.0-1+b1
[UPGRADE] xserver-xorg-video-apm:amd64 1:1.2.2-2 -> 1:1.2.3-3
[UPGRADE] xserver-xorg-video-ati:amd64 1:6.13.1-2+squeeze1 -> 1:6.14.4-5
[UPGRADE] xserver-xorg-video-radeon:amd64 1:6.13.1-2+squeeze1 -> 1:6.14.4-5
</aptitude.log>

note that it seems that it seems that my xserver was still from squeeze.

unfortunately after the upgrade my gfx-card stopped working.

#1: i got a watermark with the ATI-logo, telling me that i am using "unsupported
    hardware". apart from the watermark, everything looked great and i still had
    hardware openGL acceleration.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

since the watermark was annoying, i started another upgrade. given that testing
is now frozen, i removed the sources for 'squeeze' and did a full upgrade. this
unfortunately made things worse:

   * What was the outcome of this action?

#2: after a reboot, Xserver failed to start.
so i started to hack around, including regenerating a new xorg-conf (using
aticonfig --initial), downgrading fglrx-driver and friends to 1:12-6~beta-1,
upgrading again to 1:12-6-2.
all to no avail.
when using the 1:12-6-2 drivers, `aticonfig --initial` will refuse to generate
an xorg.log with the error:
  aticonfig: No supported adapters detected
when using the 1:12-6~beta-1 drivers, aticonfig is happy and generated the
xorg.conf, but the Xserver will crash as soon as it gets started.

i also managed to produce the odd kernel-freeze, kernel-oops and hanging
X-server. (though - due to lack of systematic approach - i cannot really recall
what exactly is needed to trigger a kernel-freeze)

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

i expected my gfx card to work.
i checked the ati/amd website whether they still support the "Radeon HD 6310",
and it seems the driver package was last updated 2012-06.
however, ati/amd only mention xerver-xorg <=7.6 on their website.

given that the the card is not so old, i don't think it is already deprecated.
(though i wonder why aticonfig does not recognize it properly, in this case)

if it is however, then i suggest that the fglrx-package goes the same route as the
nvidia-package: provide multiple versions of the drivers.

unfortunately, using the opensource "radeon" drivers is really not an option.
