[Pkg-fglrx-devel] using debconf to create an xorg.conf(.d) snippet?

Hi,

something that probably would be nice to the users of the non-free
drivers would be some debconf interface that creates a minimal xorg.conf
(or better xorg.conf.d snippet) which enables the non-free driver on
installation.

I tried before for nvidia, but didn't succeed, yet.

* It should integrate with the glx alternative - switching between mesa,
nvidia and fglrx should disable/enable the appropriate config bits.
Idea: create /etc/X11/{nvidia,fglrx}.conf and add a slave link to the
alternative which places the config in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
I tried to start some discussion in debian-x last year:
https://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2011/07/msg00159.html

* It should somehow integrate with the vendor supplied tools that break
your xorg.conf.

* It should do nothing if there is something already configured.

* It should keep the system working if the non-free driver is removed

Any opinions?

Andreas

PS: the nvidia-support package has a
create-xorg-nvidia-conf-experimental script that shows my approach
