did not happen with previous versions of fontforge which was updated very recently;
tried this which worked:

zino at yoda:~/freefont/ttf-freefont-20060501cvs$ cd sfd/
zino at yoda:~/freefont/ttf-freefont-20060501cvs/sfd$ ../debian/scripts/ConvertFont ../sfd/FreeSansBoldOblique.sfd
Copyright (c) 2000-2007 by George Williams.
 Executable based on sources from 13:10 1-May-2007.
Converting FreeSansBoldOblique.ttf


will dig to see what happens.
