What a coincidence that this thread should come up now.  Way back in 2006 in 
Extremadura I undertook to investigate an overhaul of defoma.  For various 
reasons I was unable to get very far but I just recently got a copy of the 
O'Reilly book on "Fonts & Encodings" and I will have free time soon.  So if 
you like I can take this package from you and begin a rewrite.  (Though I 
would like actual maintainence to be a team responsibility.)
