There are various unrestricted utilities out there to help with that and
we have an open-standards and interop promise for the next version of
FontLab: See http://tinkerhouse.net/log/robothon-2009-day-2/

So it's certainly a good thing to have that extended source available as
well.

I'm preparing an article on font formats interop with more details.

Yep, exactly:
http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/Fonts

There are various place that we need to look at for our team "packaging
pipeline":
http://unifont.org/fontguide/
http://scripts.sil.org/OFL_fonts
http://openfontlibrary.org/wiki/Existing_Free_Fonts (although that page
should be renamed existing-libre-open-fonts).

The Fedora team has:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Category:Font_wishlist

Cheers,
