Also it's always worth running the released tarball through various
checks: text files, metadata, etc and then interacting with upstreams
before committing the source to our repository.

Bear in mind that for many many designers, licensing and the structure
of a tarball is still a bit of an afterthought considering all the work
which has already gone into the glyphs, hinting, smart features, etc...

The perspective of a creator is different than the one from a packager,
but they work together for the greater good :-)

That's why we have a VCS template as a recommendation:
http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-fonts/foo-open-font-sources/#_foo-open-font-sources_
Please make use of it when interacting with upstreams. (the structure
will be updated soon but it still provide a good discussion basis).

Always strive to be gentle with upstreams, it's fairly obviously in
everybody's interest :-)

Cheers,
