An option in the rules file:

ifeq "$(DIST)" "Ubuntu"
	CONFIG_OPTS += --with-freetype-bytecode

was added under the Ubuntu people claim.

This means that the freetype source package must be installed and
unpacked before building fonforge. And yet something must be done
manually, and thus compiled fontforge program can not be distributed
freely. But the Ubuntu developers are still required to do so. I just
do not understand why this problem is not revealed in a long time.
