Indeed, maybe the next round of updates will be adjusting some of the
descriptions of our packages...
The ttf format is both modifiable source and object code. The more
extended font sources upstream chooses to provide the more we can
package and distribute. See the foo-open-font-sources VCS template for
In the case of Libertine (and Biolinum) the extended font sources as
stored in the upstream repository include more than just the .sfd
(spline font database from fontforge).
BTW "free fonts" is an ambiguous term that we shouldn't be using: it
refers to freeware fonts distributed with modification rights. Instead
we should be using "libre/open fonts". Much clearer and less prone to
confusion, especially from the perspective of designers.
