I personally prefer SVN plus the mergeWithUpstream mode of
svn-buildpackage, especially for teams.

For upstream stuff I always use git or git-svn if I have to deal with SVN.

In any case, it is a good idea to upload source packages to
mentors.d.n so sponsors don't have to deal with a VCS.
