I'm not sure but don't you think that TeX detects *.otf as
OpenType and *.ttf as TrueType fonts? If so, it is not
what I wanted to explain.
If IPA ver.3 and ver.2 use the same ipam.ttf then,
on a system with IPA ver.3, TeX will output vertical
typesettings correctly but will run slowly.
On the other hand, on a system with IPA ver.2,
TeX will fail to output vertical typesettings correctly
but will run rapidly.
I think this is unreasonable and confusing.
If I misunderstand you, I'm very sorry.
