Hi George,

the liberation fonts do not even include the surrounding symbols (e.g. 
U+2644) that you showed in the attached screenshot, so I can hardly 
believe this has anything to do with the liberation fonts. Instead, 
there seems to be a font installed on your system that makes 
fontconfig believe it provides these symbols, whereas it doesn't.
