The common practice in such case is building the package and put the
result (orig.tar.gz; diff.gz; *deb, .dsc, .changes) somewhere for a
potential sponsor to upload.

That way, you'll learn how to build packages (of course, in a clean
chroot, with pbuilder, etc).

The sponsor (who's likely to be me) will also rebuild unless (s)he is
very very very confident with your work, but still..:-)
