I have asked upstream to provide a rule to rebuild the font files,

David Crossland (the original author) has just posted to this list 
that he thinks the proposed package name sounds like a good idea. ;)

Alright, this would also incidently solve the issue of re-inventing 
upstream's build system to rebuild the fonts. ;)
