No symlinks needed then.

Indeed. Often with games they embed the font in the source tarball,
but for Debian we remove that and symlink to the font package since
that is the easiest hack. Some games use sane font rendering libraries
that talk to fontconfig to find fonts but most do not.

I would say the transitional one, not much point in having them in the new one.
