Both should be renamed. I'd suggest fonts-georgewilliams as package name.

You can follow whatever has been done in many other font packages
(preferrably those that have been renamed quite recently as we made a
few mistakes in the first packages we renamed) such as
fonts-dejavu or fonts-freefont.
A transitional package is mandatory and should be kept at least until
the next release cycle *and* as long as the package has reverse
dependencies.
A Breaks/Replaces combination is to be used for the new package for the new package

Yes, it should be renamed. I never did that with GIT because all packages I
renamed were renamed back in the SVN days. So, better take advice
from, say, Vasudev...
