Wikipedia has this info about common use of the private use area:

Looks like ubuntu, windows, and mozilla logos are precedent for doing
something like this.

Claiming a codepoint for debian seems a bit weird to me, though.

I don't know what to recommend, other than avoiding any commonly-used
sections of the PUA, though.
