i also had problems with sound. since the latest nexuiz release, nexuiz
uses a newer darkplaces engine which supports more sound channels than
only the stereo ones and it tries to use as many speakers as possible
by default. running nexuiz with -sndstereo as parameter fixes the
problem. that's the solution upstream told me. i created two debian
menu entries - one that starts nexuiz with and the other without
-sndstereo.

eeeh, and i'll change the debian menu icons to .xpm... doobiedoo :)
