Yes, adopt is the wrong word; it's used when one maintainer takes over
a package from an other maintainer (who's willing to give it away).

Yes, I'm willing to sponsor it, but your package fails to build from

It seems you miss to build depend on libsdl-net1.2-dev.  BTW: You can
easily test that by using pbuilder.
