Same here.  If I would need to have many unrelated changes, then it could be
useful to give them all their own name using dpatch.  But usually that is not
the case, and the .diff.gz is very readable, which is nice.

I very much prefer to have a unified method, whatever it is.

At first we may use them as they are, but I think it would in general be a
good idea to change them into our standard format (whatever that turns out to
be).  When someone new comes around and wants to help, I think that
"historical reasons" should not play a part in how hard it is to work on a
package.  This assumes that the unified method makes things easier. :-)

I don't have much experience with such large repositories, so I'm completely
trusting the judgement of those who do.
