Bug#475334: passage: passage is broken

Package: passage
Version: 3+dfsg1-1
Severity: important
Passage is very broken on my system.
Normally, the player can walk through a complicated 2D maze which has
treasure chests scattered throughout. (I have played the Windows binary
from http://hcsoftware.sourceforge.net/passage/ with Wine.)
However, the packaged passage does not have a maze at all. Instead the
player can move left and right, but only a small distance up and down.
And there are treasure chests everywhere on the path.
I have attached a screenshot. The player is at the bottom of the map in
this screenshot.
Changing screen resolution or full-screen mode in /etc/passage/* doesn't
affect this behaviour.
