 No, not really. png != jpg. While the game rather looks for higher
quality images, the manual only uses lower quality (and thus lower file
size) jpg images for rendering speeding up.

 No, because a jpg isn't a png, and having an jpg linked to an png could
cause strange rendering weirdnesses. It might require also changing the
links within the manuals to use the other filetype for their <img
src=""> references, and I'm not too sure about the real benefit for
doing that.
