I tried to see if the bug still reproduces with the new neverball,
after Alexander and others said that they couldn't reproduce the bug
with the new version of neverball.
I backported the 1.4.0-4 version to etch and tried it again. The bug
was still there.
Then I suspected pulseaudio, which proved to be the culprit (the first
number in the prompt is the exist status of the previous command):
0 eddy at twix ~ $ neverball
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:864:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Creating link /home/eddy/.kde/socket-twix.
can't create mcop directory
1 eddy at twix ~ $ killall pulseaudio
0 eddy at twix ~ $ neverball
0 eddy at twix ~ $
I am a member of the usual pulse groups:
0 eddy at twix ~ $ groups eddy
eddy : eddy adm dialout cdrom floppy audio video plugdev staff users
powerdev fuse debpool pulse pulse-access pulse-rt packages
My pulseaudio config is attached. Nothing is enabled in client.conf.
Ditto for daemon.conf.
/etc/default/pulseaudio has:
PULSEAUDIO_SYSTEM_START=0
and
DISALLOW_MODULE_LOADING=0
