After thinking about it, I agree. I also think this makes the behaviour
on i386 wrong; perhaps mesa should call abort() when it gets a GL call
without a valid OpenGL context on all platforms. This would make bugs in
GL applications much more apparent to people writing programs using
OpenGL and testing with mesa. The amd64 code should not segfault in any
case and the behaviour should be the same on all platforms IMO.

Not sure if I should reopen, retitle or file a new (minor) bug about
this though.
