i tried to reproduce your bug, but i couldn't make OpenArena crash on my
two test systems (i tried on my notebook an i386 with intel graphics
using mesa 7.1 and on my amd64 with software (!) mesa 7.2 OpenGL).

i guess this might be triggered by a bug somewhere in SDL, mesa and/or
Xorg. since you're probably running the radeon x11 and mesa/DRI driver,
which is known to be still a bit buggy, i'd suggest you to upgrade mesa
to a newer version: i think these libraries are limited to
libgl1-mesa-dri, libgl1-mesa-glx and libglu1-mesa. you'll find version
7.2 of these libraries in "experimental". don't forget to downgrade the
packages aftwerwards and post your success here, so i can forward the
bug to the mesa packages. ;)

if this did't help, i'd suggest you to give libgl1-mesa-swx11 a try -
this will disable hardware acceleration, so OpenArena may run really
slow, but maybe it helps to find out if it's a bug in the radeon
mesa-driver.
