at first glimpse, this looks like an alsa problem to me. Does sound work for 
you in general? Also with alsa (you could e.g. try speaker-test)? Is the 
audio device eventually busy (e.g. occupied by a different program, so that 
trigger can't open it)?

Looking at trigger's code, it'd need some fiddling to also work without sound 
backend, which I guess would be a better fallback than not starting.
