'far' contain textures and fonts (somewhat similar to a .zip file).

'fareditor' is not packaged in Debian, but is GPL'd. I used it once
to modify the color of a game texture.
As far as I know that's the preferred format for modification.
cmf and 3dg are named after the game maps, so I can only guess that
they represent them, which src/cmf/ appears to confirm. I don't know
about tools to modify them. Since upstream cares about compatibility
with the original implementation, I suppose it works on the original,
game-specific data as-is. Consequently I would say this is the
preferred form of modification, though there's currently no published
tool to modify them.
