I haven't tried XBoard on that kind of machine, but it may work fine. I
guess the easiest way to know is to try it.

Please have a look at Debian documentation if you don't know how to
install XBoard or any other chess software (for example pychess).

I don't understand, .xap files seem related to Microsoft
Silverlight. Which software installer are you talking about ?
