Hi there, we have a bugreport on launchpad that for sure will also
affect Debian. I have contacted the the developer of rocksndiamonds. He
is willing to work on the package(see the e-mails down this one).
The launchpad bugreport can be found at:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rocksndiamonds/+bug/304516
This report is still actual for Ubuntu12.10 and with this for Debian 7.0.
best regards
melchiaros
P.S: There are some more reports that seems to me related to the package
itself and distribution independed. You may want to look what of this 5
reports is of interest for you:

Hello melchiaros,
I've read the launchpad bugtracker entries to this issue.
As far as I understand, this looks like a building or packaging problem.
The "Makefile" of the game's source package allows for an appropriate
location to store system-wide highscore data files:
--- snip ---
[...]
# directory for writable game data (like highscore files)
# default is '.' to be able to run program without installation
# RW_GAME_DIR = /var/games
# use the following setting for Debian / Ubuntu installations:
# RW_GAME_DIR = /var/games/rocksndiamonds
[...]
--- snip ---
When looking at the bug report, the Ubuntu package of the game tries to
write highscore data into the directory "/usr/games/scores/", where it
apparently does not have write permissions. Although I don't know the
Ubuntu packaging conventions, I would expect program runtime data to be
written somewhere under "/var/", preferably into a dedicated directory,
like "/var/games/rocksndiamonds". This could of course be changed in the
"Makefile" to fit different distribution's needs or conventions.
Maybe I should add a workaround to store such data somewhere under
"~/.rocksndiamonds/" in case of the configured highscore directory not
being writable by the game's process.
Are you the Ubuntu package maintainer for Rocks'n'Diamonds? If so, do
you need any further assistance to re-build the package, or some changes
in the game program to fit specific Ubuntu packaging conventions?
I hope I was able to help to work around the reported bug.
Best regards,
Holger
