My opinion as an uninvolved observer:

Please do it the other way round, i.e. visible directories in a hidden 
~/.mame. I do only have the XDG directories visible in my $HOME and 
would not like random applications to add further visible directories 
on their own.

AFAICT it is common behaviour for applications to store their per-user 
data in a hidden directory in the user's $HOME. At least that's far 
less confusing than a vivible but apparent empty ~/mame directory.
